St. Hilarion Castle Wedding Photographer
A mountain castle on the Beşparmak ridge above Kyrenia. The altitude changes both the view and the weather — it can be hot below and windy up here.
The castle is tiered, with a real height difference between the lower, middle and upper sections. For photographs that is a gift: arches, window openings, and a background that changes at every level.
Light
The coast faces north: sea to the north, the Beşparmak ridge to the south. Midday sun comes from straight overhead and it is hard — a white dress blows out, eyes fall into shadow. The useful window is the last ninety minutes before sunset. The season moves the sun too: in summer it sets west-north-west into the sea, in winter west-south-west over land. Seven in the evening in June and in November are not the same photograph.
Altitude changes the light as well: sunset finishes later up here, because the ridge that blocks the sun is now below you.
Practical — worth settling early
Getting up the castle means steps, a lot of them. The upper section in a wedding dress is genuinely hard, and the wind can make a veil unmanageable. For most couples the right plan is the ceremony elsewhere and the castle for couple portraits only, in comfortable shoes.
Practical notes
- Light
- Altitude stretches the light: sunset finishes later up here. Arches and window openings give shade in the hard hours. There is almost always wind.
- Getting there
- Above Kyrenia, reached by the mountain road. The upper section means a great many steps.
