Wedding Photographer for Camera-Shy Couples

Camera-shy wedding photography, without the stiff posing

If the thought of standing in front of a camera makes you tense, you are the kind of couple I most like to work with. My approach to camera shy wedding photography is simple: I do not direct your day, I follow it. No long posing lists, no staging, no "look here and smile" for an hour. You live the day, and I photograph it as it happens.

Most people are not really shy of the camera. They are shy of being watched and told what to do. Take that part away, and the tension goes with it.

Why I don't pose you

Posed photos ask you to perform, and performing is exactly the thing camera-shy people find hard. An unposed wedding works the other way round — the pictures come from real moments, so there is nothing to act out. Your hands know what to do when they are holding a glass, hugging a parent, or reaching for each other. They freeze the moment someone says "put your arm here."

As a documentary wedding photographer, I stay a step back and let the room breathe. I work with quiet cameras and longer lenses so I am not standing on top of you. After the first hour, most couples forget I am there. That is when the honest pictures start.

What if we still feel awkward?

That is normal, and it passes. Awkwardness needs an audience. When no one is pointing at you, it fades on its own early in the day. I never ask you to hold a smile or repeat a moment. If a laugh happens, I already have it.

How the day flows when no one directs you

Getting ready, the ceremony, the meal, the dancing — each part has its own rhythm, and I move with it rather than pausing it. You never wait around for "the photo bit." There isn't one. The day simply runs, and the photographs are what is left behind when it runs well.

Gentle guidance, only where it helps

Not directing does not mean disappearing. There are a few moments where a light word helps — finding better light for a portrait, or giving you a minute alone together away from the crowd. Even then I give you something to do, not a pose to hold: walk and talk, not stand and smile. A small nudge, then I step back again.

A wedding is not a shoot. It is the one day your whole life gathers in the same room. My job is to witness it, not to interrupt it.

If you have been dreading the photos

Many couples tell me the photography is the part they were most nervous about. It rarely stays that way. When you are not being managed, you relax — and relaxed people look like themselves. That is the whole point: pictures that look like you on your actual day, not a version of you following instructions.

If this sounds like the day you want, tell me a little about your wedding and we can talk it through.
