A 16th-century caravanserai inside the walled city of Nicosia: a two-storey arcaded courtyard with a small masjid at its centre — an enclosed, quiet world in the middle of the city.
The architecture hands you a frame: the arcade arches work like a natural vignette, and the upper gallery lets you look down into the courtyard. Wide shots and close ones both come out of the same space.
Light
Because the courtyard is enclosed, the light comes from above. At midday the middle of the courtyard is hard and the space under the arcades is soft — the contrast between the two is the character of the place. Toward the end of the day the upper gallery's stone warms and the light bouncing into the courtyard softens.
Practical
This is a working building: shops, café tables and visitors fill the courtyard. For quiet frames, come early; if you want the bustle, it is already there. Permission and hours depend on its administration — confirm before fixing a date.
Practical notes
- Light
- The courtyard is enclosed and the light falls from above. Midday is hard in the middle and soft under the arcades; late in the day the stone warms and the light softens.
- Getting there
- Inside walled Nicosia; vehicles cannot enter the courtyard, so the last stretch is on foot.
