Your wedding day timeline quietly decides how good the photos will be. From getting ready to golden hour, buffers to a sample flow, here is an honest guide to planning the day without the rush.
A wedding day timeline sounds like a dry spreadsheet, but it quietly decides how good your photographs will be. I work as a documentary photographer — I don't stage moments, I follow them as they happen. The one thing that lets me do that well is a day with enough room to breathe. A well-built timeline gives that room to both of us, especially when you're marrying somewhere new to you, like Cyprus.
Why the timeline matters so much
A wedding isn't a photo shoot. It's the one day your whole life gathers in a single room. If the day is genuinely lived, the pictures arrive on their own. But when the schedule is packed too tight, the first thing sacrificed is always the same: the glances, the laughter, the long hugs. A timeline exists to protect those — to shrink the rush and let the moment grow.
How much time to give getting ready
Getting ready is the most intimate part of the day and the most underestimated. For details (rings, shoes, invitation, the dress), the final touches of hair and makeup, and putting everything on, 60–90 minutes usually works well. If you have a large wedding party, aim for the upper end.
A small trick that saves the day
Hair and makeup almost always run late. Tell your stylist a finish time 30–45 minutes earlier than the one you actually need. That little white lie rescues the rest of the day.
Golden hour: where to place the best light
Cyprus light is generous, but midday sun is harsh. The softest, most cinematic light of the day comes roughly 30–60 minutes before sunset — golden hour. For the two of you alone, I always try to reserve a 20–30 minute window just before sunset. All it takes is knowing that day's sunset time in advance and building the schedule around it. For a destination wedding this is worth confirming early, since venue and season shift sunset by a lot.
The order: ceremony, portraits, dinner, party
The classic order that genuinely works: getting ready, ceremony, congratulations, family and group photos, couple portraits (ideally timed to golden hour), dinner, then dancing and celebration. Gathering the group shots right after the ceremony, while everyone is together, is by far the most efficient — hunting people down later burns time and patience.
One tip: when dinner starts, I step back too. Nobody wants to be photographed mid-bite — and honestly, I don't love those frames either.
Buffers: breathing room for delays
No wedding runs to the exact minute. Traffic, a relative arriving late, congratulations that overrun. So build a total of 30–60 minutes of buffer into the flow, especially after getting ready and before the ceremony. Buffer isn't wasted if unused — it comes back to you as a calmer day.
A sample flow (hours are flexible)
- Getting ready and details — 90 minutes
- Buffer / travel to the venue — 30 minutes
- Ceremony — 30–45 minutes
- Congratulations and family/group photos — 30–45 minutes
- Dinner begins
- Golden hour couple portraits — timed to sunset, 20–30 minutes
- Dancing, celebration and night frames
This is a skeleton, not a rulebook. Your day, your venue and your sunset time decide how it shifts.
How many hours a photographer needs
To tell the whole story — from the quiet of getting ready to the energy of the night — I usually need uninterrupted coverage. For most weddings that lands in the 8–10 hour range; small, single-venue celebrations can be shorter.
